New Mexico is a US state located in the American Southwest, with its capital being located at Santa Fe; Albuquerque is the most populous. The state entered the union on 6 January 1912 after being taken over by the United States during the Mexican-American War and the ensuing wars with the Apache tribe. White settlers moved in following the conquest of the region from Mexico and the Native Americans, and the region is a mixture of white American, Mexican/Spanish, and Native American cultures. In 2015, the state had a population of 2,085,109 people.
