New Liberalism was a Colombian political party founded in 1979 by Luis Carlos Galan. The party claimed to represent the interests of the people and opposed political corruption, but it lost the 1982 elections; President Belisario Betancour decided to make New Liberalism candidate Rodrigo Lara the Minister of Justice in 1985. In 1987, New Liberalism returned to the Colombian Liberal Party, but it was still a de facto independent movement, with Galan being expected to win the 1989 presidential election. Instead, Medellin Cartel boss Pablo Escobar had him assassinated due to his opposition to drug cartels, and any remnants of the party had dissolved by the 1990s.
