New Hampshire is one of the fifty states of the United States, with its state capital at Concord. The state was colonized in 1623, becoming a province of England in 1679; it is named for the Hampshire region of England. In January 1776, the state was the first to establish its own government and a state constitution, and it was one of the original Thirteen Colonies. Today, New Hampshire has no sales tax or personal income tax, and its economy benefits from tourism such as skiing, snowmobiling, and other winter sports. In 2015, New Hampshire had a population of 1,330,608, with 93.9% being whites, 2.2% Asians, 1.1% African-Americans, .2% Native Americans, 1.6% multiracial, and 1% other (2.8% Hispanics of any race). 23.3% are of French descent, 20.5% Irish, 16.1% English, 10.7% Italians, 8.3% Germans, 4.7% Polish, 4.1% Scots, 2% Swedish, 1.5% Portuguese, 1.5% Greeks, 1.2% Scots-Irish, 1% Dutch, and 5.2% identifying only as "American" (a non-ethnic category).
