New England is a region of the northeastern United States that was settled in 1620 by Pilgrims from England. It began with the Plymouth Colony, and in 1630 Boston was also settled by the colony, beginning an era of expansion in the region against the native tribes. During the 1760s and 1770s, the Sons of Liberty led an independence movement against Great Britain in response to the Intolerable Acts, and the American Revolutionary War began due to the rebellion of colonists in Massachusetts. In the aftermath of American independence, the region was one of the first to be industrialized, and today it has a strong cultural identity as a region of America. In 2015, New England had a population of 14,727,574 people.
