The New Democratic Party is a social democratic political party in Canada, founded on 3 August 1961. The party had the support of affiliated trade unions and advocated creating "a more just, equal, and sustainable Canada within a global community dedicated to the same goals". The party advocated four years of budget surpluses, increasing the corporate tax rate from 15% to 17%, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, abolishing the Senate, expanding human and civil rights, workers' rights, Native American rights, expanding public healthcare, reducing poverty, increasing water quality, and other goals. In 2017, the party held no senate seats, 44/338 House of Commons seats, 1/10 provincial premier seats, 138/649 provincial legislature seats, and 2/19 Yukon Legislature seats.
