New Democracy is a liberal-conservative political party in Greece that was founded on 4 October 1974. The party was historic rivals with the Panhellenic Socialist Movement for decades, having been formed in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Greek military junta. New Democracy was founded as a more modern and progressive party of the center-right, supporting free markets while also encouraging the state to ensure that social justice was implemented. For much of the 1980s and 1990s, the party sat in opposition to PASOK, and it became an opposition party in 2015 after the rise of the socialist Syriza party. In 2019, it regained its majority and formed a new government under Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ending Alexis Tsipras' second government.
