The New Deal was the series of programs enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1938 in an attempt to end the Great Depression. He increased government spending and united the US Democratic Party and the more liberal people of the US Republican Party, establishing almost three decades of Democratic majority in the US Congress. This led to the terms "liberals" (supporters of the New Deal) and "conservatives" (opponents of the New Deal) being coined, setting the stage for decades of disputes between the two factions of US politics.
