The Nervii were a Belgic tribe of northern Gaul which inhabited what is now central Belgium and Hainault in northern France; Bagacum was their capital. By the 1st century BC, they were the most warlike of the Belgae, and they were known to trek long distances to take part in battles. They contributed 50,000 warriors to fight against the Roman general Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars of the 50s BC, and, in 57 BC, they came close to defeating Caesar. However, Titus Labienus almost annihilated the Nervii after assaulting their camp, and the survivors would be defeated after taking part in Vercingetorix's uprising in 53 BC.
