Neo-Nazism is a global phenomenon seeking to revive far-right tenets of Nazism, including xenophobia, homophobia, ultranationalism, racism, anti-Roma sentiment, anti-Semitism, and anti-disability sentiment. Neo-Nazism originated with the HIAG lobby group of former Waffen-SS officers, who sought the legal, economic, and historical rehabilitation of their former group. Some Nazi war criminals fled to South America, forming colonies that revived Nazi ideas, and the rise of migrant workers in the mid-20th century and the European refugee crisis of the 21st century led to neo-Nazism becoming more popular with elements of society who wanted to prevent immigrants from "stealing their jobs". In the 1990s, the reunification of Germany led to National Socialist Underground and other hate groups launching anti-Semitic and anti-Turkish terror campaigns, while France's refusal to assimilate Muslims into society led to conflict between Muslim immigrants and neo-Nazis led by Marine Le Pen. Neo-Nazism and neo-fascism have often been associated with one another in recent years.
