Nellie Forbush was a US Navy ensign who served as a nurse on New Caledonia during World War II. In 1942, she developed a romance with the French planter Emile de Becque, although she briefly broke off their relationship on discovering that he had mixed-race children. Lieutenant Joseph Cable helped her overcome her racism, and she eventually assumed a motherly love for the children and resumed her relationship with De Becque.
