Nele Island

Nele Island is a small island located within the US state of Hawaii. Named for the Hawaiian volcano goddess Nele, the island was regarded as sacred by the Palekana new religious movement, which came to own the island and transform it into the sanctuary of its sages and its devout haku class. In 1953, on learning that the Palekana sage intended to sell the island and use the proceeds for charity work, the hitman Bryce Fairchild murdered the sage, usurped his title, and kept Nele Island under Palekana ownership. He used the island as a top-secret training camp for Palekana zealots, having orphans sent to the island to be radicalized in Palekana ideals before having them return to Honolulu to eventually infiltrate the police, judiciary, legislature, and even the city's gangs. During the 21st century, Fairchild used the island to illegally store thousands of barrels of nuclear waste from around the world, and, in 2023, he agreed to import the Japanese government's nuclear waste with the help of former Seiryu-kai yakuza working towards reintegration into society. Fairchild's illegal dumping was revealed by the Tatara Channel VTuber Chitose Fujinomiya, resulting in Fairchild's arrest and the initiation of cleanup attempts manned by ex-yakuza.
