Nawal Shafiq-Barclay (born 1895) was an Egyptian philantrophist and businesswoman.
Biography[]
Nawal Shafiq-Barclay was born in 1895, the daughter of a British Army officer and his Coptic Egyptian wife. After her father passed away, she used her inheritance to invest in a small shipping business and grow successful ventures such as SBS and Nawal Shafiq-Barclay Trading. She dedicated part of her fortune into supporting the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and she was awarded a damehood in recognition of her philanthropy. While living in Berlin, she developed a romantic relationship with the linguist Laura Lombardi, but they broke up due to Lombardi's preoccupation with her work. In October 1937, she helped Laura's sister Gina Lombardi and the American archaeologist Indiana Jones (a mutual friend through Marcus Brody) investigate the Great Circle, which Nazi archaeologist Emmerich Voss was attempting to locate. She used her influence to embed spies within Nazi Germany's Giza excavations, helping Jones undermine their efforts.
