Nativism is the belief that the original inhabitants of a nation should have a favored status over recent immigrants or newcomers. Nativism is popular among fascist and nazist movements, and it is linked to xenophobia and the alt-right movement. Nativism has been seen in the United States since the 1840s, when Protestant American shopkeepers posted "No Irish Need Apply" on their store windows to prevent Catholic immigrants from Ireland from applying for jobs. Anti-Catholic discrimination against Irish immigrants would lead to violence against the Irish, and many Irish immigrants were forced to move into slums and ghettoes. The United States also excluded Chinese immigrants from coming into the country in an 1882 act, and they also suppressed African-American and Mexican rights, reducing both ethnic groups to a state of poverty. Donald Trump and the majority of the US Republican Party is pro-nativism and anti-Mexican. Other examples of nativism include the UK Independence Party in the United Kingdom, the National Front of France in France, the Nazi Party of Nazi Germany, and the Freedom Party of Austria (FPO).
