Nationalist Spain was an alliance of armed conservative, nationalist, Catholic, and fascist political factions which took up arms against the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. It included the fascist Falange party, the national conservative and Catholic CEDA party, the monarchist Spanish Renovation party, and the Carlist Traditionalist Communion, who supported the coup d'etat attempt of July 1936 and fought to overthrow the leftist Frente Popular government of republican Spain. General Francisco Franco emerged as the leader of the Nationalist faction, and the faction received the support of the fascist dictatorships of Nazi Germany, Italy, and Portugal during the war, while also receiving religious support from the Papacy. After the war, many former Nationalists joined the Falange party, which morphed from a Falangist-fascist party into a big tent, far-right authoritarian party including both fascist and national conservative elements.
