The National Republican Party was a conservative political party in the United States that existed from 1828 to 1833, emerging as the result of a split within the Democratic-Republican Party. The party was founded by John Quincy Adams (leader of the right-wing "Adams Republicans"), Henry Clay (leader of the center-left "Clay Republicans"), and Daniel Webster, who were opposed to the populist and centralist policies of Andrew Jackson and his own breakaway faction, the Democratic Party; many members of the National Republicans were former Federalist Party members. In 1833, after Adams' defeat, a coalition of National Republicans, Anti-Masonic Party members, disaffected Democrats, and former Federalists formed the Whig Party to oppose Jackson's reforms.
