The National Liberal Party of Germany was a national liberal party in the German Empire that was active from 1866 to 1918. The party was founded by liberal politicians who supported Otto von Bismarck's nationalist policies, which had led to the unification of Germany under Prussia. The party became aligned with big business during its history in German politics, but the left wing of the party would favor supporting fellow left-wing groups. The party rose to become the dominant party in the Reichstag parliament during the unification of Germany, and its period of great dominance was between 1871 and 1879. After Bismarck ended his attacks on the Catholic Church, the National Liberal Party refused to change their views, leading to a decline in its popularity. After World War I, the party broke up, with most of its moderate and conservative members joining the German People's Party, its left-wing branch founding the German Democratic Party, and its extreme right-wing joining the German National People's Party.
