The National Gendarmerie is a national police force in France, established in 1791 during the French Revolution. The Gendarmerie is a branch of the armed forces managed by the Interior Ministry, and its areas of responsibility are smaller towns and rural and suburban areas. In 2014, the Gendarmerie had over 100,000 members and 25,000 reservists.
