The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a social democratic political party in Ghana that was founded on 28 July 1992. The NDC was founded by the former military ruler Jerry Rawlings, who led Ghana from 1981 to 1993 before serving as the democratically-elected President of Ghana from 1992 to 2001. The party was founded ahead of the 1992 elections, and it led a majority government from 1992 to 2000 and from 2008 to 2016. The party was rivals with the liberal-conservative New Patriotic Party, which was founded by opponents of Rawlings' period of military rule during the 1980s and his presidency during the 1990s. In 2017, the party held 106/275 Parliament seats and 3/5 Pan-African Parliament seats.
