Nathuram Godse

Nathuram Godse (19 May 1910-15 November 1949) was a Hindu nationalist who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in January 1948, for which he was hanged in 1949. He was a member of the far-right RSS group.

Biography[]

Nathuram Vinayakrao Godse was born on 19 May 1910 in Baramati, Pune District, Bombay Presidency, British Raj to a family of Hindu Indians. He dropped out of high school and became a Hindu nationalist, joining the far-right RSS paramilitary group. Godse believed that Mahatma Gandhi was acting on behalf of Muslim interests as the result of the Partition of India, so, on 30 January 1948, he shot Gandhi in the chest three times with a Beretta M1934 pistol during evening prayer, having bowed to Gandhi before shooting him at point-blank range. Godse was sentenced to death by Jawaharlal Nehru, and he was executed by hanging on 15 November 1949.
