
Nathaniel Pendleton (27 October 1756 – 20 October 1821) was Attorney General of Georgia from 1785 to 1786 and Judge of the US District Court for the District of Georgia from 26 September 1789 to 1 September 1796, preceding Joseph Clay. He served as Alexander Hamilton's "second" during his fatal 1804 duel with Aaron Burr, and he was the father of Nathanael G. Pendleton and the grandfather of George H. Pendleton.
Biography[]
Nathaniel Pendleton was born in New Kent County, Virginia in 1756, and he became a lawyer before serving in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He worked as a lawyer in Savannah, Georgia before serving as Attorney General of Georgia from 1785 to 1786 and as a district court judge from 1789 to 1796. He later became a county judge for Dutchess County, New York, and, in 1804, he served as a "second" to Alexander Hamilton during his duel with Aaron Burr. He died in 1821.
