Nathan Lewis Miller (10 October 1868-26 June 1953) was Governor of New York (R) from 1 January 1921 to 31 December 1922, interrupting Al Smith's two terms in office.
Biography[]
Nathan Lewis Miller was born in Solon, New York on 10 October 1868, and he was admitted to the bar in 1893. Miller worked as a corporate lawyer for US Steel, helping with the mergers that made Andrew Carnegie the head of a powerful multi-corporation. Miller entered politics as a Republican Party member, serving as State Comptroller from 1901 to 1903. From 1903 to 1915, he served in the New York Supreme Court, and he supported Herbert Hoover as the nominee during the 1920 election; Warren G. Harding won the election. However, Miller was elected Governor in 1921, serving for nearly two years before Al Smith succeeded him. He served as general counsel for US Steel after 1925, and he died on 26 June 1953 at the age of 84.
