Nathan Dudley (20 August 1825 – 29 April 1910) was a US Army colonel who was best known for commanding the soldiers at the Battle of Lincoln.
Biography[]
Nathan Dudley was born in Massachusetts in 1825, and he served as an aide to Nathaniel P. Banks during the American Civil War. In January 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier-General of volunteers, and he would go on to serve on the Indian frontier for much of his career. His good service was overshadowed by his despicable and incompetent involvement in the Lincoln County War, during which he was commandant of Fort Stanton. He supported Lawrence Murphy's faction during the war, and he brought in US Army troops to suppress the Lincoln County Regulators at the Battle of Lincoln. Towards the end of his career, he assisted George Buell's campaign against the Apache chief Victorio, and he fought in the 1887 Crow War. He retired in 1904, and he died in 1910.
