The Nat Turner Rebellion (21-23 August 1831) was a failed slave uprising in Virginia led by Nat Turner. Seventy African slaves and freedmen rose in rebellion against the state government of Virginia, and Nat Turner ordered the killing of every white person in the area. A total of 65 whites were killed before the slaves were defeated, and 200 innocent African-Americans were murdered by white militiamen as the rebellion was put down. Nat Turner himself was hanged in November for leading the uprising, and state legislatures passed laws that ended the education of slaves and freedmen, restricted rights of assembly and civil rights, and required white ministers to be at black churches.
