Nashville is the capital of the US state of Tennessee, the county seat of Davidson County. The city was founded in 1779, and it was named for the Continental Army general Francis Nash, who was killed at the Battle of Germantown during the American Revolutionary War. Nashville was incorporated in 1806 and became the permanent state capital in 1843, and it was the first Confederate state capital to fall to the Union during the American Civil War, being occupied in February 1862. During the 20th century, the city became a center of the country music industry, and it also become home to several colleges and universities. In 2015, the Nashville metro area had a population of 1,830,345 people.
