Naseem Rana

Naseem Rana (born 20 September 1942) was director of Pakistan's ISI from 1995 to 1998. He succeeded Javed Ashraf Qazi and preceded Ziauddin Butt.

Biography[]

Rana was born in Rawalpindi, Punjab, British Raj (present-day Pakistan). In 1964 he joined the army and a year later served in the Second Indo-Pakistani War, and in 1971 fought India again in the Bangladesh Liberation War.

During the 1980s, Rana served under the ISI in the Soviet-Afghan War, backing the Afghan Mujahideen. In 1995 he became director of the ISI, backing the Taliban extremist insurgents in their war with the Islamic State of Afghanistan, and his term ended in 1998. He retired a year later.
