Nara is the capital city of Nara Prefecture, Japan and the sixth-largest city in the Kansai region of Honshu. Its name means "flat land" in Japanese, and Empress Genmei moved the capital of Yamato Period Japan on 11 March 708; it remained the capital until 784 AD, when the capital was moved to Kyoto. Nara was modelled after the Tang Chinese capital of Chang'an and became an epicenter of Buddhism and a prominent pilgrimage site as a result of its Chinese influences. Nara became known for its many Buddhist temples. By 2017, Nara had a population of 359,666 people, including 3,000 registered foreigners (1,200 Koreans and 800 Chinese).
