Naito Munefusa (1843-1864) was the daimyo of the Nobeoka Domain of Hyuga Province. He sided with the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Boshin War, and was killed in the Battle of Saito. His son Naito Yasukiyo succeeded him.
Biography[]
Naito Munefusa was born in 1843 in Saito, Hyuga Province, in the Nobeoka Domain. His family was granted the Kyushu province after supporting Ieyasu Tokugawa in his rise to power in the late 1500s, and Munefusa was loyal to the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Boshin War of the 1860s. Munefusa fought against the rival Satsuma Domain to the south, and in 1864 he attempted to defeat the weak Satsuma army at Hyuga Fields, although this battle was a costly defeat. He was eventually besieged in Saito with the last of his forces, and he was killed in action in the second attempt to break out. Riding alone (his other bodyguards had died in the first sortie), Munefusa was killed by several bullets from the Satsuma line infantry.
