Naim Efendi

Naim Efendi was an Ottoman Turkish mintmaster and the adopted father of the socialite Peride.

Biography[]

Naim Efendi was born in Istanbul, Ottoman Turkey to a wealthy Turkish family. He served as a mintmaster before retiring, and he and his family lived a privileged life in a mansion in Istanbul; the black marketeer Halit Vatansever supplied them with every luxury during World War I, and Naim and Halit became close. In 1919, the British Army secretly attempted to recruit Efendi into a plot to kill the Ottoman Army officer Mustafa Kemal, as Naim opposed Kemal's nationalist movement. Naim agreed to grant the British officer George Chalmers a munitions depot ahead of the Turkish War of Independence, while his adopted daughter was recruited by the nationalist Fahrettin to help avert Kemal's assassination.
