Nagorno-Karabakh is a region of the Caucasus which is currently disputed between Armenia's Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan. The region has had a long history of being Armenian, but the fall of the Soviet Union led to the former Azerbaijan SSR acquiring the region and not the Armenian SSR. In 2013, the region had a population of 146,573 people, with 95% of the population being Armenian in 2001; Assyrians, Greeks, and Kurds made up the remaining 5%.
