Nabeshima Mochizuru (17 October 1846 – 19 June 1921), later called Nabeshima Naohiro or Chokudai, was the final daimyo of the Saga Domain. He backed the Imperial rebels in the Boshin War.
Biography[]
Mochizuru was the son of Nabeshima Naomasa, and in 1861 he became the 11th daimyo of the Saga Domain. At the Battle of Ueno he defeated the remnants of the Tokugawa Shogunate army after the decisive Battle of Toba-Fushimi and after the war's end he gave his domain to the Emperor and left for Great Britain in 1871. In 1882 he returned to Japan after serving in desk jobs for the British government and in 1884 he was made a Marquis of Emperor Meiji. His daughter married Prince Nashimoto Morimasa and he was the grandfather of Consort Banja of the Yi Empire of Korea.
