Mutatawwi'ya were religious troops who, inspired by their faith, had volunteered to fight for Islam. Untrained, reckless and fanatical, the troops were poorly equipped with hand weapons such as cudgels. The wild warriors were more of a mob rather than a disciplined unit, eager to get into hand to hand with their enemy no matter the odds.
