Muslim Atayev

Muslim Atayev (1974-27 January 2005) was the founder of Yarmuk Jamaat and a leader of the Second Chechen War. Anzor Astemirov succeeded him as the leader of Yarmuk Jamaat after his death at the hands of the Russian police.

Biography[]

Muslim Atayev was born in 1974 in Kendelen, Kabardino-Balkar ASSR, Soviet Union to a family of Sunni Muslim Balkars. He was trained as an insurgent in camps at Pankisi Gorge in Georgia, and he led 30 volunteers from Kabardino-Balkaria to join Ruslan Gelayev's Chechen insurgent group. In August 2004, Atayev founded the Yarmuk Jamaat insurgent group, and on 27 January 2005 he was killed in an apartment building in Nalchik alongside his wife, three other women, and several of his comrades.
