Muriel Elizabeth Bowser (2 August 1972-) was Mayor of Washington DC from 2 January 2015, succeeding Vincent Gray.

Biography[]

Muriel Elizabeth Bowser was born in Washington DC on 2 August 1972, and she was elected to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in 2004. In 2007, she was elected to the City Council, and she was endorsed by the AFL-CIO, the police union, and the service employees union. In 2014, she was elected Mayor without any opposition from the Republicans. In 2017, she introduced controversial animal regulations including the licensing of all cats, and the policies were repealed due to their unpopularity. She accepted political campaign contributions above the legal maximum and received donations from developers and contractors, and she also refused to create a public facility due to budget problems, yet supported the construction of a practice facility for the Washington Wizards. She pledged to end chronic homelessness in DC and to support gun control, and she also reaffirmed Washington's sanctuary city status.
