The Munich Soviet was a short-lived German socialist republic in Munich, Bavaria that existed from 3 to 26 October 1919 during the German Revolution. The republic was proclaimed by revolutionary workers loyal to the Communist Party of Germany, and they seized the reins of the local government. 9,000 armed workers were organized into the "Red Guards", with Hugo von Hindenburg serving as their commander. On 26 October 1919, Ruprecht Heppendorf's 18,000-strong Reichswehr army crushed the uprising with just 263 losses.
