Muhsin Hendricks

Muhsin Hendricks (June 1967-15 February 2025) was a South African imam and gay rights activist. Born in Cape Town in 1967 to a family of Indonesian and Indian background, he came out as gay in 1996, making him the world's first openly gay imam. He advocated for the acceptance of LGBT people within the Muslim community, arguing that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah condemned rape rather than homosexuality. In 2007, the Muslim Judicial Council condemned Hendricks and issued a fatwa against gay people. On 15 February 2025, he was killed in a drive-by shooting while driving back from officiating a lesbian wedding in Gqeberha.
