Muhammad Suleiman

Muhammad Suleiman (1959-1 August 2008) was a General in the Syrian Arab Army who was a top liaison between the Syrian Arab Republic and Hezbollah. He was assassinated by Mossad in 2008.

Biography[]

Muhammad Suleiman was born in 1959 to a family of Alawite Syrians, and he was a key aide to Bashar al-Assad since before he entered office as President of Syria in 2000. He became a General of the Syrian Arab Army under Assad and served as the top liaison with the Hezbollah terrorist group, which was given refuge in Damascus. Due to Suleiman's position in the Syrian government and Hezbollah, Israel's Mossad set out to assassinate him to weaken their enemies. On 1 August 2008 he was killed by sniper fire to the head and neck while at a beach resort in Tartus, the first known instance of Israel targeting a legitimate government official.
