The Muhallabids were an Arab dynasty who ruled over Egypt from 771 to 793, succeeding the Abbasid Caliphate and preceding the Tulunids. The Muhallabids were descended from al-Muhallab ibn Abi Sufra, and his son Yazid ibn al-Muhallab served as Governor of Khorasan and Iraq. The Muhallabids were rewarded for their support for the Abbasid Revolution with the governorship of North Africa, ruling in uninterrupted succession from 771 to 795. The Idrisids later seized power in Morocco, as did the Rustamids in central Algeria. The family fell from power after the Fourth Fitna.
