Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock is a town in Shropshire, England. It was founded by the Britons as Wininicas, meaning "white area", and its Christian Romano-British community eventually integrated into the Anglo-Saxons during Sub-Roman Britain. The town came to be known to the Saxons as Wenloca, meaning "enclosed white area", and King Penda of Mercia founded a Roman Catholic abbey there in 680 AD. The abbey flourished until 874 AD, when a Danish Viking attack occurred. By 1086, Wenlock had 73 households, and it became a borough in 1468 under King Edward IV of England. While the priory was suppressed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, the town's charter was confirmed by King Henry VIII in 1547. However, the borough came to be reduced in size, leading to the split of "Much Wenlock" and "Little Wenlock"; the borough was abolished in 1966. By 2019, The Sunday Times wrote that Much Wenlock was one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom. In 2011, Much Wenlock had a population of 2,877 people.
