Mstivoj

Mstivoj (930-995) was High Chief of the Obotrites from 966 to 995, succeeding Nako and preceding Mscislaw.

Biography[]

Mstivoj was born in 930, the son of Nako and the brother of Mstidrag. His father had him and his brother baptized as Christians in 955, with Hermann Billung as their godfather. However, upon succeeding his father in 966, Mstivoj renounced Catholicism, and he and his brother Mstidrag led the Great Slav Rising against the Holy Roman Empire in 983. Mstivoj destroyed the recently-built city of Hamburg, winning Obotrite independence. He died in 995; his daughter Tove of the Obotrites married Harald Bluetooth, and his children Mscislaw and Pribigniew succeeded him.
