Moxley Sorrel (23 February 1838-10 August 1901) was a Brigadier-General of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War.
Biography[]
Moxley Sorrel was born in Savannah, Georgia on 23 February 1838 to a wealthy family, and he was the brother-in-law of William W. Mackall. He worked as a bank clerk before joining the Georgia Hussars of the Confederate States Army at the start of the American Civil War, taking part in the seizure of Fort Pulaski. He volunteered as General James Longstreet's aide-de-camp, serving under him until October 1864, when he was promoted to Brigadier-General. Sorrel commanded a brigade under William Mahone at Petersburg and Hatcher's Run, and he was wounded in both battles. He became a steamship company executive after the war's end, and he died in Roanoke, Virginia in 1901 at the age of 63.
