Mostafa Chamran (8 March 1932 – 20 June 1981) was the Minister of Defense of Iran from 1980 to 1981. Chamran fought and died in the Iran-Iraq War, killed by shrapnel in the Battle of Dehlavieh in Khuzestan.
Biography[]
Chamran was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1932, and became an electro mechanics student at Tehran University. He headed to the United States for further training in his field, obtaining an M.D. Chamran became fluent in Persian, English, Arabic, German, and French, and aided in the 1979 Iranian Revolution. He also founded the Amal Movement in Lebanon.
In 1980, Chamran was appointed as Minister of Defense of Iran and became an infantry unit commander. During the Battle of Dehlavieh, Chamran was hit twice in the leg by shrapnel and refused to be taken away from his men, dying of mortal wounds on the battlefield.
