The Moros are an indigenous Muslim population in the Philippines that make up 5.1% of the population. The majority were Sunni, and their name came from the Moors of Spain, which became a synonym for Muslims in East Asia. The Moros live mostly in Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan, and their claimed homeland is Bangsamoro, an autonomous region of the Philippines. From the 1970s into the 2010s, the Moros struggled for autonomy, and in 2014 the government decided to grand the Moros their own autonomous state. There are 5,100,000 Moros in the Philippines.
