Morie Arakawa (1949-) was a Japanese businessman who served as head of sales for Doton Pharmaceuticals HQ in Osaka during the 1980s. He spent at least ¥100 million a year on entertainment, and he frequented Dotonbori's nightclubs and became known for his boorish personality. On the night of 12 December 1988, he visited the Cabaret Grand and made a scene when he felt up the hostess Maki-chan and shoved the waiter who attempted to remind Arakawa of the "no-touching" policy. The club's manager, Goro Majima, then confronted Arakawa and politely asked him to leave, but Arakawa proceeded to empty a bottle of brandy over his head and mock him. Majima maintained his calm, and, when Arakawa attempted to pick a fight and swing at Majima, Majima had the club's band start playing a swing beat, and he dodged all of Arakawa's dodges and put on a show of offering service to Arakawa. Ultimately, Arakawa was tired out and was about to be escorted out of the club by the bouncers, but Majima told the guards to let Arakawa stay at the club (saying that Arakawa's life should not be ruined by a visit to the police station after a night of foolishness) in exchange for Arakawa paying for everyone's drinks that night. The audience responded by giving Majima a standing ovation, and, at Majima's behest, applauding Arakawa for his "courage".
