The Moretti crime family, also known as the Falcone crime family, was an Italian-American Mafia crime syndicate which operated from New York City during the first half of the 20th century. It was founded in 1913 by Tomaso Moretti, a Sicilian immigrant mobster, and they smuggled Canadian liquor into the United States during Prohibition. In 1931, the family went to war with the rival Vinci crime family, and the war came to an end when Moretti capo Carlo Falcone, in conjunction with Vinci consigliere Leo Galante, had Moretti murdered in a car bombing. Falcone modernized the family and entered into the drug industry, becoming the main supplier of marijuana and heroin in New York City; his family rose to be the second-most powerful Mafia family in the city after the Vincis. In 1951, Falcone was murdered by his former soldier Vito Scaletta at the behest of Galante, and Eddie Scarpa took over the much-weakened family, which had lost much of its leadership and membership.
