Mordechai Anielewicz

Mordechai Anielewicz (1919-8 May 1943) was a leader of the Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943.

Biography[]

Mordechai Anielewicz was born in 1919 in Wyszkow, Second Polish Republic to a poor family of Polish Jews. Anielewicz was caught while trying to flee to Mandatory Palestine through Romania by the Soviet Union after Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939, and he was later released. He organized resistance to the Nazi with Jewish resistance members, and he led the Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. He was killed in the failed uprising on 8 May 1943 with his girlfriend when the ZOB command post was surrounded.
