Mordecai Bartley

Mordecai Bartley (16 December 1783-10 October 1870) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-OH 14) from 4 March 1823 to 3 March 1831 (preceding Eleutheros Cooke) and the Whig Governor of Ohio from 3 December 1844 to 12 December 1846 (succeeding Thomas W. Bartley and preceding William Bebb).

Biography[]

Mordecai Bartley was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania in 1783, and he was raised in Jefferson County, Ohio. He served under William Henry Harrison during the War of 1812 before settling in Mansfield, Ohio and serving in the State Senate from 1816 to 1818, in the US House of Representatives from 1823 to 1831, and as Governor from 1844 to 1846 (succeeding his son Thomas W. Bartley). He raised 40 companies and 7,000 men for the Mexican-American War during his tenure.
