Moralism is the belief that religious morals should guide a person through everyday life, and that only one religion is to be accepted. It is the opponent of secularism, as it argues that there are moral truths in life, and that human actions should be judged by a strict moral code. Moralism was a major policy in assimilation efforts; an example of moralism was the Mexican government's forced conversion of Texan settlers to Catholicism if they wished to settle in Texas. Today, moralism is advocated by conservative and far-right groups such as the US Republican Party and the American Constitution Party, as well as by major religious movements.
