Monzo Akiyama

Monzo Akiyama (30 December 1891 – 25 January 1944) was a Rear Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II.

Biography[]

Monzo Akiyama was born on 30 December 1891 in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. He joined the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1912 and became commander of the IJN 17th Marine Regiment in 1941 at the start of World War II, taking part in the 1943 invasion of the Aleutian Islands. Admiral Matome Ugaki later sent him from New Britain to Kwajalein, and he assumed command of the island's garrison. He was killed when a naval shell hit his bunker on 25 January 1944 in the bombardment preceding the Battle of Kwajalein.
