Montgomeryshire is one of thirteen historic counties of Wales, located in northern Powys. It is named after its county town, Montgomery, which in turn was named after one of William the Conqueror's councillors, Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. The largest town is Newtown, followed by Welshpool and Llanidloes. In 2011, it had a population of 63,779 people.
