Moldova is a country located in Eastern Europe, situated between Romania and Ukraine on the Dniester River; the capital is Chisinau. On 27 August 1991, Moldova became an independent country after years of Ottoman, Romanian, and Russian rule, but the breakaway state of Transnistria fought against Moldova for its own independence, and Moldova's agricultural and industrial output dropped in the years since the end of the Cold War. For this reason, Moldova became the poorest country in Europe. In 2014, Moldova had a population of 2,913,281 people.
